Healing Trauma Silently: Brainspotting with Joanne Mednick and Mike Beychok

For us, anything that we can do to make the process gentler is what we want to do as our goal. We actually don't need to know what their issue is or what they're working on, but by finding out where, in their field of vision, they are not comfortable and they don't like looking, we can help them access it on that subcortical level and the brain actually will just start to process the trauma by looking at that spot rather than having to talk about it and going into it again so they're able to release it much more on the emotional level and through the nervous system without actually really talking about it.
Imagine healing deep emotional wounds without having to say a word. In this episode of 'Recovery Unscripted', trauma therapists Joanne Mednick and Mike Beychok from the Serenity Trauma Center and Foundation sit down with host David Condos to explore the transformative power of brainspotting and somatic therapy. Recorded at the Innovations in Recovery conference in San Diego, they dive into how these techniques help veterans suffering from military sexual trauma and PTSD, as well as victims of trafficking.
By focusing on nonverbal cues, they aim to gently uncover and heal hidden aspects of the brain without re-traumatizing patients. Joanne and Mike share their unique approach to therapy, emphasizing the importance of trust and emotional safety in the healing process. They discuss how addressing trauma is crucial in addiction recovery, making the journey less daunting and more effective for their clients.
If you're curious about innovative ways to tackle hidden trauma or want to understand the importance of nonverbal processing in therapy, this episode offers a compassionate and enlightening perspective.
