Seeing Through the Lens of Psychosis: James and Ashley’s Journey

So gaining insight from a clinical perspective seems to mean that you accept the illness narrative that you, that you accept that what you're experiencing is simply, um, your mind misbehaving, and you accept the medical model and the medication that I don't know, I'm expected, I think, to take for the rest of my life, and I do take, and it does seem to kind of help and moderate, moderate the experiences in a way that makes them manageable.
Ever wondered what it’s like to live with a mind that sees the world differently? In this episode of the Recovery Devon Podcast, James, the Managing Director, and Ashley, a Board Member and staff at Bridge Collective, open up about their experiences with psychosis. They chat about the ups and downs of living with altered realities, where everyday life can feel both magical and terrifying. James and Ashley share personal stories about what helps and what hinders during psychotic episodes.
They dive into how healthcare professionals sometimes miss the mark, triggering more paranoia instead of offering support. But it’s not all challenges—they also find silver linings, discussing how psychosis can be seen as a natural part of the human experience. Ashley talks about the seductive nature of manic psychosis, while James brings in perspectives from different cultures, highlighting how some societies view these experiences in a more positive light.
They also mention the documentary 'Crazywise', which explores how people worldwide turn psychological crises into transformative journeys. This episode is perfect for anyone who wants to understand psychosis better, whether you’re experiencing it yourself, supporting someone who is, or just curious about mental health. James and Ashley’s conversation is raw, real, and filled with hope, showing that recovery is not just possible but can be a deeply enriching process.
