Rooted in the Gospel: Pastor Dan on Repentance, Communion and Recovery

Episode Overview

  • Repentance is described as both turning away from the past and changing the mind, then choosing to believe in the finished work of the cross.
  • Recovery Church gatherings are integrated into a treatment programme, giving clients regular exposure to faith-centred recovery communities.
  • Former clients often carry the “seeds” of Recovery Church back home, sometimes becoming future church planters for addicts by addicts.
  • Leaders are reminded to lay down their own burdens at the altar, showing humility by responding to the same calls they give others.
  • Those unsure how to feel God are encouraged to read the gospel of John and pray for opened spiritual eyes while giving Jesus a “seat at the table.”
"God's not playing hide and go seek. He's not looking for a secret handshake."

What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol? Studio RC’s Rooted Aftermath series catches that question right at the heart of faith and recovery. Here, Pastor Max sits down with Pastor Daniel Cornite, an ambassador with Recovery Church Movement and clinical programme manager at a treatment centre, for a raw chat about repentance, communion, and staying grounded in the gospel.

You’ll hear how Daniel’s work in a faith-based treatment programme naturally flows into Recovery Church, with clients attending different Recovery Church expressions five nights a week. Many later return home carrying what he calls the “seeds of Recovery Church”, often becoming the next church planters themselves.

He stresses that repentance isn’t just a 180-degree turn; it’s “changing of the mind” and then choosing to believe in “the finished work of the cross.” An altar call for 400 leaders becomes a powerful picture of laying down burdens, with Daniel himself on his knees at the side of the stage, “preaching the gospel to myself.” There’s honest talk about humility in leadership, the weight of ministry, and that feeling of “how am I here?” when God moves in a room full of people in recovery.

As Max puts it, Recovery Church really is “a church for addicts by addicts.” The conversation centres on Daniel’s conference message about being rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ, especially the call to repentance. They also tackle a classic sponsee question: how do you feel God?

Daniel’s gentle suggestion is simple but challenging—read the gospel of John, pray for open spiritual eyes, and give Jesus “a seat at the table.” If you’re curious about how faith, recovery, and church life can fit together in a real, messy, hopeful way, this conversation might be the nudge you’ve been waiting for. What burden are you ready to lay down next?
