First 30 Days: Steve’s Sobriety Survival Guide for the LGBTQ+ Community
I know that for me, one of the places that triggered me to drink would be my own home, when I was alone by myself, and so those First Couple Days of sobriety, on my Mondays off from work while my husband was out at work, I would make sure I was out of the house doing whatever I can all day long, because it was when I was at home, alone by myself, with my own thoughts and my own fears and my own insecurities, and nothing else. But those things, that's what really triggered me.
Embarking on the journey to sobriety can feel like navigating a maze, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. In this episode of 'gAy A: A Queer Sober Podcast', host Steve Martin-Bennet opens up about his own early days of sobriety, sharing practical tips and heartfelt advice for newcomers. Celebrating his first 30 days sober, Steve dives into the importance of attending AA meetings and how they can become a cornerstone of your new routine.
He doesn’t shy away from discussing the challenges, but also highlights the incredible support and sense of community these meetings offer. Steve introduces the acronym HALT (hungry, angry, lonely, tired) as a crucial tool for identifying potential relapse triggers. By recognizing and addressing these feelings, newcomers can better navigate their path to sobriety. He also shares his personal struggles with meditation and prayer, admitting that while it wasn’t easy at first, these practices have become vital in his daily routine.
The serenity prayer, in particular, has been a beacon during overwhelming moments. Connecting with others is another key theme in Steve’s guide. Sharing your thoughts and experiences at meetings might seem daunting, but Steve emphasizes how powerful and healing it can be. He recounts his own journey from fear to realization that his words had value and could help others. This episode is not just a collection of tips; it’s a heartfelt conversation filled with empathy and real-life experiences.
Whether you’re just starting your sobriety journey or looking for new strategies to stay on track, Steve’s insights offer valuable guidance and encouragement. Tune in to hear more about how to build a strong foundation for your sober life.
