Let's respect these men and women in the trades. If you know somebody in the trades, take a moment to remind them how hard their job is.
In a recent episode of People First Radio, host Joe Pugh spoke with Trevor Botkin, a crucial figure in the initiative to bring peer support to the construction industry. Botkin, who is six years into his recovery journey, shared his experiences and the transformative work he is conducting through the Construction Foundation of British Columbia (CFBC).
One of the most significant projects Botkin discussed is The Forge, an ambitious plan to convert a former biker clubhouse in Langford into a support hub for trades workers. This project is a response to alarming statistics published by the BC Coroner Service, which indicated that more than one in five people who died from drug toxicity worked in trades, transport, and equipment operator roles. Botkin's personal journey of recovery has profoundly influenced his professional endeavors.
He emphasized the importance of peer support, considering it the missing link in addressing the mental health challenges faced by men in the trades. The Forge aims to provide a safe space for individuals in the industry to connect, share experiences, and access resources that can aid in their mental health and recovery journeys.
One notable initiative mentioned was the Tailgate Toolkit, an early pilot project that continues to raise awareness about leadership on job sites and offer guidance to employers and organizations. This toolkit is part of a broader effort to cultivate a supportive environment for trades workers, fostering communication and understanding. Botkin advocates for breaking down stereotypes surrounding construction workers, emphasizing respect and recognition for their hard work.
He encourages the community to actively support individuals in the trades, whether through simple gestures of appreciation or by offering tangible help. The Forge and related initiatives represent a hopeful movement towards better mental health support in the construction industry. Through peer support and community engagement, Botkin and his colleagues strive to change the narrative and offer vital resources to those who need them most.
