Weight Stigma: Finding Freedom Beyond the Numbers
“I think that it is important to not let it be something that is building and building and then when a doctor says your weight Five Years down the road, that it's this huge trigger, and then all of a sudden we're back in our eating disorder. But I don't think it's important to know ever really, and I think it is important to do what we need to do to not put so much- I don't know, I just feel like so much weight lol on our weight, like it just, it doesn't determine really anything.”
What happens when stepping on the scale becomes more about fear than health? In this episode of 'The Recovery Journey', Maria Danielle sits down with Rachel Bailey to tackle the often overlooked issue of weight stigma. They dive deep into why the medical community's focus on BMI can be more harmful than helpful, especially for those in recovery. Maria and Rachel argue that constantly weighing patients can trigger unhealthy behaviors and set back progress.
They advocate for less frequent weigh-ins and emphasize the importance of finding a trauma-informed therapist who can help patients accept and tolerate their bodies as they are. Rachel shares her own experiences and stresses the need for a supportive environment that doesn’t fixate on numbers. This conversation is a must-listen for anyone tired of letting the scale dictate their self-worth. Maria and Rachel's compassionate dialogue offers a fresh perspective on living a healthier, more balanced life beyond the numbers.
