Where to Start: The Beginning Steps to Effective Addiction Treatment

Detoxification, especially with alcoholism or barbiturates, can be fatal. Inpatient treatment can be highly effective. Do the steps, get a sponsor when they get out, quit relying on controlling it themselves... and really take it seriously when they get out in an inpatient center.
Dr. Pete Butkins, better known as Doc Pete, is an addictions specialist whose mission is to help people recover from addiction. In the second episode of his podcast, Alcoholism and Addiction Solutions, he shares his expertise on where to start when it comes to effective addiction treatment.
The first step, he says, is to identify if a loved one needs help. This can be challenging because addicts and alcoholics often have an attitude towards people who want them to stop. However, if someone does want help, it's important to strike when the iron's hot and not wait a day. There are many resources available, such as crisis hotlines and resource and referral centers, as well as the number on your insurance card.
When it comes to finding the right treatment center, Dr. Pete emphasizes the importance of finding a place that fosters abstinence and is spiritually inclined. Some people prefer outpatient treatment, while others need to detox and require inpatient treatment. An experienced person who is licensed in addictions or has a certification in addictions and has been sober and clean themselves is the best person to talk to.
Dr. Pete also warns against the trap of putting someone in a treatment center that shields them from the consequences of their addiction. The goal is to get someone sober and clean for good, not just for a month or two. This requires expertise to spot reservations and circumvent them.
Inpatient treatment can be highly effective, but it's important to take it seriously when you get out. You're shielded from many of the consequences while in the center, but when you return to the mainstream of life, triggers occur. Dr. Pete recommends bonding with people in AA and NA and sticking around with successful people who will teach you how to think if you're humble and honest. Outpatient treatment is also effective, according to reliable research.
One of the most important takeaways from this episode is the importance of finding an expert to help guide you through the process. Detoxification, especially with alcoholism or barbiturates, can be fatal, and it's crucial to have someone who knows what they're doing. With the right resources, support, and guidance, addiction treatment can be a successful and transformative journey.
