Starting on a New Path: Overcoming Alcohol Addiction with Exit the Drinking Life Podcast

This tool of focusing on what can I start instead of focusing on what am I going to stop, is going to help you again work with your mind instead of working against it.
Debi Talbert, certified Mindset & Alcohol Freedom Coach, is the host of the Aging Flipped - Breaking The Stigma around ADHD, Aging & Rethinking Alcohol podcast. In this episode of Exit the Drinking Life, she shares a tool to help listeners overcome the tendency to give up on their goals. Talbert explains that we often forget to focus on the right thing, which can help us work with our brain instead of against it. We are conditioned to believe that with alcohol, the only way to be successful is through an all or nothing approach, but Talbert suggests focusing on what we can start doing instead of what we need to stop doing. By doing this, we can give ourselves credit for the progress we make and start asking ourselves what we want alcohol to do for us, increasing our awareness of the emotional component of our addiction.
Talbert encourages listeners to understand that failure is simply a missing component, and the emotional part, shaming, blaming, and berating ourselves, comes from our personal thoughts about failure. By changing our focus from stopping to starting, we can start working with our mind instead of against it. Talbert shares the story of the armless archer, who refused to believe the social conditioning that told him he could not become an archer without arms. His story is a testament to the power of starting and the importance of working with our minds to achieve success.
