Our focus is quite simple - we transform trauma into triumph.
Imagine a world where kids are armed with the knowledge to protect themselves from harm. That's exactly what the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre is striving for with its groundbreaking Kids First Project. In this episode of Life Unscripted, host Janice Arnoldi chats with Brian Bratt, the Centre's executive director, about their new programme aimed at educating children from kindergarten through to grade 12 on safe and unsafe touching, secrets, and recognising potentially dangerous online behaviour.
Brian Bratt explains how the Centre's unique approach turns trauma into triumph by rebuilding self-esteem and trust among young victims. The Centre collaborates with Niagara Regional Police and Family and Children Services, providing a one-stop location for investigations, which eases the burden on families during difficult times. The Centre also offers after-school programmes and Camp Acorn, Niagara's first trauma-informed day camp.
The Kids First Project introduces 'Safe Talk', a programme that starts with kindergarten students learning about online safety, and builds progressively through grade 12. It's a revelation that even the youngest children need these lessons, highlighting the importance of early education in preventing abuse. Bratt emphasises the need for open communication about abuse, pointing out how secrecy can lead to lifelong struggles with mental health.
He notes that some abused children might grow up to become abusers themselves if they don't unlearn harmful behaviours. The Centre's work is crucial in helping these kids heal and grow into healthy adults. If you're curious about how early intervention can change lives or want to understand more about the vital role of advocacy centres, this episode is a must-listen. It’s a powerful reminder that every child deserves to feel safe and supported.
