“When the program started, it was a gift from Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher. Today, it's a gift from the American people. I can't tell you, going over overseas and in Germany, the senior military are so envious of the support Americans give and provide. And again, we're pleased to represent. It's a tremendous privilege.”
Imagine a place where military and veteran families find solace and support while their loved ones receive medical treatment. In this episode of UK Health Radio's 'Confessions of a Reluctant Caregiver', the sisters welcome David Coker from the Fisher House Foundation to share some truly touching stories. Fisher House has nearly 100 comfort homes across the globe, providing free lodging to families near major military and VA medical facilities.
These homes, with up to 21 suites each, offer private bedrooms, communal kitchens, and inviting living spaces, ensuring families can stay close during challenging times. David reveals how Zach and Elizabeth Fisher's vision turned into a sanctuary for over 455,000 families, saving them an estimated $575 million in lodging and transportation costs. Besides housing, Fisher House runs the Hero Miles Program and Hotels for Heroes, using donated miles and hotel points to bring families together.
The foundation also awards scholarships to military children and recognizes programs that support veteran communities. Through David's stories, you'll hear about the profound impact Fisher House has had on countless lives, offering hope and healing when it's needed most.
