Shamanic Breathwork, Sobriety and Remembering Who You Are

Episode Overview

  • Sobriety is framed as a spiritual choice: alcohol, drugs and plant medicines are seen as distractions that keep people from doing the real inner work.
  • Shamanic breathwork, combined with music and gentle touch, is used to open the chakras, surface buried trauma and create conditions for deep emotional release.
  • Healing begins when people stop seeing themselves as victims, come back to the present moment and start loving the person they see in the mirror.
  • Letting go of old relationships, roles and soul contracts is presented as vital for raising one’s vibration and ending cycles of suffering.
  • Setting clear boundaries and validating oneself, rather than seeking external approval, is described as a key step in reclaiming personal power.
You’re the gift. You’re the answer. Stop looking on the outside.

How do people find strength in their journey to sobriety? This conversation on the Great Awakening Show brings a very spiritual angle to that question, as breathwork facilitator Marty Ocean Eagle shares how shamanic breathwork, trauma healing and a deep rejection of numbing substances shaped his path.

Host Joanne – Divine Life Yogini – talks with Marty about his life-changing experience on 4 May 2019, when an hour of shamanic breathwork left him feeling blown apart, connected to cosmic consciousness and “remembering” who he really is. He describes a powerful sense of oneness with all life, receiving his spirit name Ocean Eagle, and finally seeing himself in the mirror without shame.

For those curious about sobriety from a spiritual perspective, Marty is very direct: he has been alcohol-free for over 22 years, hasn’t used marijuana for decades, and rejects plant medicines and other substances as shortcuts that keep people looking outside for answers. “You’re the gift. You’re the answer. Stop looking on the outside,” he says, linking alcohol, drugs and even porn to shame, disconnection and stalled healing.

Instead, he focuses on breathwork journeys that combine breath, music, touch and chakra-focused energy work to release stored trauma. He shares stories of men uncovering long-buried childhood abuse, and explains why surrender, presence and doing the inner work matter more than any quick fix: you reveal, feel and then re-heal.

The episode also wanders into wider spiritual themes – the “great awakening”, balancing masculine and feminine energy, cutting old soul contracts, and learning to set boundaries as an act of self-love. Marty’s core message, though, stays simple and very relevant to anyone recovering from alcohol or other compulsions: stop numbing, come back to the present moment, and learn to truly love the person you see in the mirror.

If you’re questioning your relationship with alcohol or other escapes, could this kind of heart-led inner work be the missing piece for you?
