Spiritual Roots of Anxiety and Addiction: Finding Freedom with Beatty Carmichael

Episode Overview

  • Anxiety and many addictions are framed as consequences of spiritual misalignment rather than purely mental or physical issues.
  • Life is described as a three-legged stool, where weakening the spiritual leg places strain on mental and physical health.
  • Family lineage, negative self-labelling and early rejection or abandonment are presented as common pathways into addiction.
  • Changing identity statements from "I am an addict" to "I had an addiction" is suggested as a powerful shift in recovery.
  • Processes outlined in *Outrageous Peace* and *The Prayer of Freedom* aim to help people let go of spiritual misalignments and regain peace.
If you're doing all the right things and it's still there, it means they weren't really the right things.

Curious about how others navigate their sobriety journey? This conversation on UK Health Radio’s Voices of Courage brings together host Ken D. Foster and returning guest Beatty Carmichael to talk frankly about anxiety, addiction and what they describe as their spiritual roots. Beatty lays out a simple but striking idea: life rests on three legs – mental, physical and spiritual.

When that spiritual “third leg” gets wobbly, the other two start to struggle, and anxiety, chronic stress and addictive behaviours often follow. He’s seen this up close while teaching at a large women’s addiction recovery centre, where he reports that many women find relief from anxiety and addiction within weeks by addressing what he calls spiritual misalignment.

Drawing on his books *Outrageous Peace* and *The Prayer of Freedom*, Beatty explains patterns like family lineage (“my wife, her mother and grandmother all had panic attacks”), self-labelling (“Hi, I’m an alcoholic”) and early rejection or abandonment as key parts of the addiction puzzle. His "word curse" example – growing up hearing "you’re going to be an alcoholic just like your dad" – will resonate with anyone who’s carried harsh labels from childhood into adult life.

Ken shares his own recovery journey, saying, "I woke up in 1992 from some addictions... the only thing that saved me was the spiritual root," and pushes the discussion into practical territory: overwhelm, stress, narcissistic relationships and the quiet denial that "a little" anxiety or pain is just normal life.

Beatty’s response is direct: "If you're doing all the right things and it's still there, it means they weren't really the right things." If you’ve tried conventional routes and still feel stuck, this episode offers a faith-based angle on healing, identity and finding peace beyond symptom management. Could reframing yourself from "I am an addict" to "I used to have an addiction" be one small step you’re ready to take today?
