From Teen Alcoholic to Determined Dad: Luis Shares His Second Chance

Episode Overview

  • A loved one’s honest words can be the spark that pushes someone toward treatment and change.
  • Entering treatment with low expectations can still lead to strong commitment once progress is felt.
  • Pausing and "sleeping on it" before reacting can prevent impulsive choices that derail recovery.
  • Short-term setbacks in a programme feel big, but may not matter much compared to long-term sobriety.
  • Learning to feel emotions fully, rather than numbing them, can bring unexpected happiness in small everyday moments.
How about you take a step away, go better yourself, and then come back when you're ready to be a dad.

What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol? For Luis, it’s a 17-year-old daughter who finally said, "How about you take a step away, go better yourself, and then come back when you're ready to be a dad." Odyssey House Journals brings Luis’s story to the table with host Randall Carlisle and therapist co-host Jackie Buckman.

You’ll hear how drinking started at 13 as weekend beers, moved into daily alcohol, weed, and later IV meth, heroin, and fentanyl, and left Luis a "full-blown alcoholic" with the shakes by 19. By 15 he was a dad, but his partner shut him out of their child’s life, and he used that as a green light to keep partying. Years of jail time, loss, and broken promises followed.

The turning point came when his daughter confronted him about his absence: "17 years of not having you in my life, and here you are coming back into it just to not be there." That blunt honesty hit him hard. A few days later, walking down the long ramp outside the county jail, he says he saw two options: "Just keep going, keep running, or go seek help." He chose to call Odyssey House.

Now around four months into treatment and roughly a year sober from alcohol, Luis talks about learning to sit with emotions instead of numbing them, using simple tools like "sleeping on it" before reacting, and discovering joy in small things like ice cream and joking with peers. Jackie adds a therapist’s view on teen parents, brain development, and why setbacks in treatment feel huge but don’t have to ruin everything.

This episode speaks to anyone who’s ever felt they’ve let family down and wonders if it’s too late to change. If you’re standing on your own "jail ramp" moment, which choice are you going to make?
