Edinburgh Festival: David Boyle's Sober Struggles and Triumphs
“There's so many people here with dreams and hopes. You look at the guide. There's like 3,000 shows. Do you know how many dreams that is that are going to be destroyed? Just statistically, no one's going to be a success. Like maybe 20. Maybe 20 people will have a good time. A lot of people are spending a lot of money here as well. Not f*ck around money either, like £2,000 for accommodation. People are getting PR agencies for £1,000 for producers like it's insane. Some people are paying up to £10,000 to put on their goddamn show, I mean which is like AUD$20,000. What for like 50 people to come to your show? The risk-reward with that is insane. Like, I mean comedians have been doing it for like 10 years of doing this, putting f*cking $20,000 over on the line for a delusion. At least my delusion isn't costing much money. Like, if you're going to indulge on your delusion, try not to lose too much money.”
Imagine trying to stay sober at one of the world's most booze-filled events—the Edinburgh Festival. That's exactly what comedian David Boyle dives into in his podcast episode titled '3 Years 78 Days - My Delusion'. Boyle, the host of 'I'm Quitting Alcohol', takes listeners through his rollercoaster experience at the festival, sharing both the highs and the lows of performing while staying alcohol-free.
He opens up about the festival's politics, the financial gamble that comes with performing, and the mental toll it can take. Boyle also touches on the delusions many performers have and the risks they take in chasing their dreams. With his signature mix of humor and raw honesty, Boyle offers a compelling glimpse into the challenges of sobriety amidst the chaos of one of the most famous festivals in the world.
Whether you're on your own journey to sobriety or just looking for a good laugh, this episode is a must-listen.
