From Entitlement to Humility: Marking the First Sign of a Transforming Addict

Episode Overview

  • September is presented as national transformation month for Christians, shifting focus from recovery language to heart-level change through Christ.
  • Addiction is framed as a belief issue where lies must be replaced with biblical truth for genuine change.
  • The first mark of a transforming addict is moving from an entitlement mentality rooted in pride to humility and love for God.
  • Romans 12:2 and Matthew 22:37–40 are used to show that transformation involves renewal of the mind and loving God with all one’s heart, soul, and mind.
  • Identity statements such as “I’m an alcoholic” are challenged for born-again Christians, with a call to see addiction as sin (idolatry or drunkenness) that can be confessed and forgiven.
We’re not just trying to recover, be sober. That’s good. We want to be transformed.

What drives someone to seek a life without addiction labels and lean instead into real heart change? This episode of The Addiction Connection Podcast focuses on that question by marking September’s National Recovery Month as what Dr. Mark E. Shaw calls “national transformation month” for Christians. Speaking directly to people affected by addiction, their families, and biblical counsellors, Dr. Shaw explains his five “marks of a transforming addict”, drawn from Matthew 22:37–40 and Ephesians 5:18–21.

This first part of a five-episode series zeroes in on one key shift: moving from an entitlement mentality rooted in pride to a life marked by humility and love for God. He defines mentality as “an outlook, a perspective, a way of looking at life,” then argues that addiction is “a belief issue, first and foremost,” where lies in the heart have to be replaced with truth.

With a mix of seriousness and light humour (including a gentle jab at lawyers), he uses everyday images like children’s growth marks on a wall to explain how these “marks” help counsellors and families measure genuine spiritual growth. From there, he contrasts human-centred recovery language with biblical transformation, challenging the identity statement “Hi, I’m an alcoholic,” saying it denies the power of the Holy Spirit in a born-again Christian.

Instead, he points to Romans 12:2 and the command to love “the Lord your God with all your heart… soul… and mind” as the first clear sign that someone is moving from self as “little g god” to serving the one true God. If you’re wrestling with addiction yourself, supporting someone who is, or involved in Christian counselling, this episode gives a clear, scripturally grounded framework for what change can look like beyond just getting clean and sober.

Could this shift from recovery to transformation be the next step you’ve been looking for?
