Episode Overview

  • Early creative urges can be suppressed by practical expectations, yet those impulses often resurface later in life.
  • Corporate success without alignment to who you are can lead to burnout and anxiety, especially when combined with major caregiving responsibilities.
  • Art and creative play offer a powerful outlet to release pressure, quiet critical voices and access inner messages.

  • A consistent creative practice can reveal next steps, values and direction, especially for entrepreneurs feeling lost in external advice.
My heart that was being stitched up was saying, "Listen to me."

Ever wondered what might happen if you actually listened when your heart said, "Listen to me"? This conversation on the UK Health Radio Podcast follows host Hilary Burns and intuitive artist and creative coach Linda Rasch as they talk about what it means to reclaim creativity after years of doing what was "sensible". Linda shares how a childhood love of painting was pushed aside when her mum warned, "Don't study art.

There's no money in that." She went into communication arts and then corporate marketing, climbing the ladder and leading teams. On paper she was successful; inside she felt increasingly out of sync. Things came to a head when she was juggling a demanding technical role while driving 12 hours most weekends to care for her ill mother. The strain left her burnt out and, as she describes, leaving corporate life with an anxiety disorder. Art became her way back.

Linda explains how a simple doodle of a stitched heart brought a message through her pen: "Listen to me." From there, painting turned into a daily practice and a form of healing. She talks about naming a painting “Free”, created from reconnecting with her little girl self who wanted to be seen, valued and loved. Through this process, words and images like "Step into the spotlight" appeared on her canvases, gently nudging her towards a new path.

Hilary and Linda chat about perfectionism, the pressure to “get it right”, and how that strangles creativity in art, work and life. Linda’s now turned her five-step creative method into a way of helping entrepreneurs and creatives tap their own inner guidance, using paint (or other mediums) to access clarity, freedom and a sense of purpose.

If you’ve ever felt boxed in by expectations or afraid your dreams won’t pay the bills, this gentle, honest chat might nudge you to pick up a brush, a pen, or any tool that lets your own heart finally speak.
