A Legacy of Hope: Long-Term Recovery, Faith, and Family Change

Episode Overview

  • Long-term, residential, faith-based programmes can offer stronger foundations for lasting sobriety than short stays for those with years of addiction.
  • Building genuine community and including fun activities helps people see that life in recovery can be exciting and joyful.
  • One person’s decision to enter recovery can break generational patterns and change the spiritual and emotional legacy of an entire family.
  • For loved ones, consistent love, firm boundaries, listening, and ongoing prayer matter more than trying to fix everything quickly.
  • Even if someone leaves treatment early or relapses, seeds of change can grow later, so holding on to hope remains crucial.
There is always, always, always hope. They are not gone forever.

What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol or drugs, and what happens to a whole family when one person says yes to recovery? This conversation between host Sherry Bis Bee and Pastor Daniel, CEO of 180 Ministries, gives a front-row seat to that kind of change. A long-time partner of the show, Pastor Daniel shares how 180 Ministries, a DBA of Teen Challenge of the Rockies, focuses on long-term, Christ-centred residential recovery for men and women.

He explains that many students have been in addiction for decades, so healing the body, brain, and heart takes time, community, and consistency, not just 30 or 60 days. Their programme mixes faith, counselling, and serious fun: snowboarding, camping trips, shooting days and other adventures that show, as he puts it, that “life is exciting” and joy doesn’t end with sobriety.

Sherry and Daniel talk a lot about legacy – how one person’s decision to get help can “break generational curses” and send hope rippling through parents, children and extended family. A standout story is of a man who left the programme after four months, struggled for years, yet later turned up married, thriving, and deeply committed to his faith: the seed planted in those months eventually grew. For parents and loved ones, Daniel offers straight-talking encouragement.

Step one is love without enabling, staying supportive and prayerful, even when fear and exhaustion feel overwhelming. As he says, “There is always, always, always hope. They are not gone forever.” The episode also highlights an Inspired Culinary Experience event, used as a creative way to celebrate recovery stories, share student testimonies, and help families see what long-term, faith-based treatment can look like in real life.

If you’ve ever wondered whether change is possible after years of chaos, this honest, hope-filled chat might be the nudge you’ve been waiting for.
