From Blackouts and Eight Arrests to Emotional Sobriety: Jen’s Story

Episode Overview

  • Rock bottom for Jen was not her eight arrests, but the moment she became truly self-aware and honest about her addiction.
  • Childhood trauma, an alcoholic mother and early exposure to alcohol shaped her patterns of lying, people-pleasing and blackout drinking.
  • Despite a successful career and parenting, Jen describes herself as a “shell of a human being” while maintaining a heavy alcohol and opiate habit.
  • Reaching out to another alcoholic, entering treatment and following the guidance of women in recovery became the foundation of her sobriety.
  • Jen now focuses on emotional sobriety, practising routines, connection and compassion, particularly towards her late mother and other women in addiction.
“None of those were rock bottom. None of them. Rock bottom is when you're self-aware.”

Get ready to be moved by a raw, honest account of how alcohol can hijack a life long before anyone thinks to call it a problem. This episode shares Jen’s journey from blackout drinking at 12 to eight alcohol- and drug-related arrests, all while looking like she had things handled on the outside. Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, Jen was surrounded by alcoholism, foster care, and childhood sexual abuse. She learned early to lie, people-please, and pretend everything was fine.

Alcohol arrived as the perfect escape: “I was a blackout drinker pretty much immediately,” she explains. Even as she juggled school, sport, and later a successful career and motherhood, drinking stayed centre stage. Jen talks about trying to build the ‘perfect family’ to fix her past, including two marriages, three children, and a thriving photography business.

Behind closed doors, though, she was “a shell of a human being” drinking whiskey, using other substances to keep going, and spending around $1,000 a week on opiates and alcohol in her 40s. Eight arrests still didn’t feel like rock bottom. As she puts it, “None of those were rock bottom. None of them.” Her turning point came when she woke up with a black eye she couldn’t explain and finally told another alcoholic the full truth.

From there, treatment, daily connection with women in recovery, and a focus on what she calls “good orderly direction” helped her rebuild her life. She shares how she found compassion for her mother after her death, made amends with her father before he passed, and now aims for emotional sobriety rather than just not drinking.

If you’ve ever wondered how far things can go before someone reaches out for help – and how much life can change afterwards – this story might be exactly what you need to hear today.
