Baby Boomers Battling Addiction: A Path to Recovery

One of the things we know is that the older adult population- and when we talk older adults for this purpose I'm going to use and above, because we're not, you know, and I'm saying we are in a time in life where things are changing, and a lot of that is physically, but a lot is with life and life stages.

How do you approach a cherished older family member when their addiction becomes apparent? This is a growing concern as more adults over 50 face addiction issues. In this episode of 'Spirit of Recovery', hosts Rev. Dan Beckett and Rev. Michelle Vargas welcome Brenda Iliff, the executive director of Hazelden Naples, to shed light on this pressing issue. Brenda brings over two decades of experience in gerontology, chemical dependency, and counseling to the table, making her insights invaluable.

She explains why older adults are particularly vulnerable to addiction due to factors like slower metabolism and easy access to prescription drugs. Brenda also shares effective recovery approaches tailored for older adults, emphasizing the importance of medical supervision during detox and the unique benefits of peer support groups. She discusses how families can play a crucial role in supporting their loved ones through recovery.

If you're looking for practical advice and hopeful stories about overcoming addiction later in life, this episode offers a compassionate and informative perspective.
