What remarkable journeys have people faced head-on against addiction? This episode of HOPECAST centres on one young man whose story shows how breaking enabling cycles can open the door to real change. Father Francis Pizzarelli, founder and executive director of Hope House Ministries, talks about a young man "born into privilege" whose life spiralled into heroin addiction. After years of rescuing him, his parents finally stopped enabling him.

He ended up sleeping under bridges in Florida, and that rock-bottom moment pushed him to reach out for help and commit to long-term treatment at Hope Academy. You’ll hear how the early months were rough, filled with resistance and hard self-reflection. With time, he started to look honestly at his choices and how he could shape a different future.

Once he reached a certain stage in the programme, he had the chance to go back to education through scholarships at Suffolk Community College or St. Joseph's University. Having previously flunked out due to drug use, he surprised everyone – including himself – by excelling, graduating at the top of his class, then going on to law school where he became valedictorian. The episode highlights how his parents’ decision to stop enabling was painful but vital.

As Father Francis says, "Because love is hard" and sometimes love means doing the tough, unpopular thing. That choice helped transform a fractured family into a whole one, with a son they once feared was dead now living as a practising attorney, husband and father of three. Through this story, the focus stays firmly on hope: "To know that hope does spring eternal. And it is there.

But you have to reach for it." It’s a message aimed at anyone feeling shackled by addiction or crisis – and for the families wondering if changing their own behaviour could be the first step towards healing. Could breaking an enabling cycle be the turning point in your story too?
