Orange Shirts and Second Chances: Eric Button on Long-Term Recovery

Episode Overview

  • Long-term treatment can be life-changing for people with repeated legal trouble and chronic relapse patterns.
  • Honesty about rule-breaking and manipulation is a key step in moving beyond mere “acting sober” into genuine recovery.
  • Family feedback, even from a young child, can become a powerful catalyst for change and accountability.
  • Spiritual growth and recognising “God-incidences” help sustain daily sobriety and a sense of purpose.
  • Lasting recovery has to be chosen for oneself; trying to get sober for a job, partner or family rarely works.
  • Service to others in detox and treatment keeps recovery active and grounded in compassion.
Nobody can get sober to save a marriage, to save a relationship, to save a job. You can only do it when you want to do it.

What makes a recovery story truly inspiring? Eric Button’s journey from chaos to long-term sobriety gives plenty to think about, and probably a few goosebumps too. Host Neil Scott sits down with Eric at an addiction treatment conference in Amelia Island, Florida, where Eric is instantly recognisable in his trademark orange. Behind the bright colour is a past packed with arrests, deception, and a double life fuelled by alcohol.

Eric recalls having bail money on deposit before nights out, and getting his first arrest just after his 16th birthday. He thought he was in control – right up until the legal system and a wise attorney pushed him towards long-term treatment instead of more jail time. Eric talks frankly about going to Burning Tree Ranch in Texas and spending months still “acting” his way through treatment.

The turning point comes with a simple rule about family visitation and a powerful moment with his seven-year-old daughter, who tells him, “Dad, you’re supposed to follow the rules.” That one sentence hits harder than any court order. Now nearly 21 years sober, Eric shares how recovery has become “a daily thing”, built on spiritual growth, service, and what he calls “God-incidences” instead of coincidences.

He describes recovery as a constant chance to give back, support families, and be present for his ageing parents and adult daughter.

The episode wraps with actor Rob Lowe talking about readiness: “Nobody can get sober to save a marriage, to save a relationship, to save a job… you can only do it when you want to do it.” If you or someone you love is wrestling with addiction, could Eric’s story and Rob’s reminder about being truly ready be the nudge you need today?
