What emotional and inspiring tales of recovery are out there? This conversation between host Jenny Bushkell and guest Camey (Cammie) Joy is one that hits straight at the heart of trauma, healing, and faith-based hope. Cammie shares how she was born in the mountains of Guatemala with a severe bilateral cleft lip and palate, unable to nurse and facing certain death.
Her biological father, Jesus, carried her down the mountain to a hospital, only to be told there was nothing doctors could do. On the steps outside, two mysterious men appeared, directed him to an orphanage, handed over money and clothing, then vanished.
As Cammie puts it, “I believe that this was a divine intervention over my life and even angels sent by God to save me.” From there, you’ll hear how adoption into an American family led to 23 surgeries, a long battle with fear and identity, and a journey Cammie calls being “chosen three times” – by her birth parents, her adoptive parents, and by God.
She talks honestly about writing her memoir *Beautifully Scarred*, reopening painful memories, and realising that “no story is too far gone” and that scars – emotional, physical, or spiritual – can point to Jesus’ own. The episode has a gentle, conversational style, aimed at people who crave honest stories of redemption: adoptees, people carrying visible or invisible scars, Christians wrestling with shame, and anyone weighing up adoption themselves.
There’s even a touch of humour, like when Cammie recalls her mum saying, “we are all born with a cleft… in our heart,” and Cammie replying she thought her mum was “crazy”. If you’re sitting with pain, rejection, or a messy past, this story asks a simple question: what might happen if you gave God your “yes” and let him turn your scars into something beautiful?
