Combating Child Obesity: Leicester’s Community Efforts and Initiatives
“Whilst there are a number of reasons for the child obesity rate being as high as it is, Leicester City Council have programmes in place designed to try and get the figure done.”
Child obesity is a growing concern, especially in places like Leicester. In this episode of The Health Hub, host Daniel Hayton sits down with Jonny Howard and Itain Mcdermott, a programme manager at Leicester City Council, to tackle this pressing issue head-on. The discussion sheds light on some alarming statistics: 28% of children in Year 6 are considered obese, with 13% classified as severely obese, rates that are significantly higher than the national average. But what’s driving these numbers?
Family influences, maternal obesity, and economic factors all play a part. The physical risks associated with obesity are numerous and severe, ranging from heart disease and stroke to asthma and type 2 diabetes. Leicester's unique demographics, limited opportunities for physical activity, high screen time, and reduced physical education contribute to these high obesity rates. Yet, it’s not all doom and gloom. Leicester City Council is taking proactive steps to combat child obesity through various community-based programmes.
The Flick programme engages families in healthy eating and physical activities, while community sports clubs offer sessions focused on nutrition and exercise. Schools are also getting involved through the Food for Life programme, which promotes healthy eating habits among primary school children. This episode is not just about highlighting the problem but also about showcasing the solutions and the community's commitment to making a difference.
Tune in to learn more about how these initiatives are making an impact and how you can contribute to this vital cause.
