Denise M. takes the mic at the NHAA conference to share her heartfelt journey through Al-Anon and the impact it had on her life. Growing up in a seemingly happy and orderly family, Denise never encountered alcohol-related issues at home. However, her life took a turn when she married a man who struggled with alcoholism.

Denise candidly recounts her early days of marital bliss, moving from Upper Darby to New Jersey, and the gradual realisation that her husband’s drinking was taking a toll on their family life. She describes the physical and emotional turmoil she faced, including a period where she was constantly cleaning and organising her home to cope with the chaos around her.

Denise's story takes a pivotal turn when her husband decides to enter rehab, leaving her to manage their household and children alone. This period of isolation and struggle led Denise to discover Al-Anon, a fellowship that provided her with the support and understanding she desperately needed. She shares how attending meetings and getting involved in service work transformed her perspective and gave her the strength to carry on.

Through her involvement with Al-Anon, Denise found a community that helped her rebuild her life and relationships. She speaks about the importance of letting go of resentment and embracing the support of others to heal.
