A lot of veterans feel, well, if I say what's going on or if I say how I'm feeling, a doctor, a psychologist, a nurse, whoever it may be, may just throw me in an institution. I think that's a fear that a lot of veterans have is that they open up and be honest, that they'll be locked away or put in a mental health facility for the rest of their lives, where if there is a veteran that they are matched with and they're making and forming that relationship and that individual is like, yeah,
Jonathan Bittner, a military veteran turned therapist, is back on 'Untold Valor' to dive deeper into the unique challenges veterans face when seeking mental health support. Jonathan sheds light on why veterans often need more than just substance abuse help, tackling issues like loneliness and isolation that many struggle with after service. He also explains why some veterans hesitate to seek help, fearing negative consequences if they open up about their struggles.
In this episode, Jonathan discusses the vital role of CompeerCORPS, a mentorship program that pairs veterans with peers who understand their experiences. He shares actionable steps for those feeling isolated and unsure of where to turn. The conversation also touches on how COVID-19 forced CompeerCORPS to adapt, highlighting the resilience and creativity required to continue providing support during the pandemic. Jonathan's insights offer a compassionate look at the barriers veterans face and the power of peer connections in overcoming them.
Whether you're a veteran yourself or know someone who is, this episode provides valuable perspectives on the importance of community and support in the journey to recovery.
