Ancestral Roots, Men’s Work and Psychedelic Healing with Tristan V. Esquivez

Episode Overview

  • Reconnecting with indigenous Mexica teachings can open new pathways for healing generational trauma and family relationships.
  • Spiritual and psychedelic work is safer and more effective when rooted in humility, responsibility and lived embodiment rather than performance.
  • Communication, spoken from the heart rather than outsourced to technology, is a vital part of emotional healing and relational repair.
  • Men’s work and coaching can help masculine-identifying people break out of people-pleasing, avoidance and emotional shutdown patterns.
  • Carefully held psychedelic experiences, including solo psilocybin ceremonies, may support deep grief release and shifts in how we relate to our lineage.
“Focus more on deepening your practice than talking about it… instead of trying to talk about it, spend more time embodying it and let that speak for you.”

Curious about how others navigate their sobriety journey? This conversation between host Matthew Dunehoo and guest Tristan V. Esquivez brings together ancestral medicine, masculinity, and psychedelics in a way that feels raw, honest, and very human. Tristan shares how reconnecting with his Mexica roots shifted his healing from abstract spirituality to something deeply grounded in lineage and generational trauma.

Growing up Catholic in Southern California with Mexican parents, he later stepped into the Mexica medicine path, learning about the “medicine wheel,” sweat lodge, and the philosophy of the Sixth Sun. As he puts it, returning to indigenous teachings helped him “heal generational trauma in a way that I hadn’t experienced before” and changed his relationships with his parents, sister, and grandparents. You’ll hear him unpack the tension between performance and embodiment in spiritual and psychedelic spaces.

Early on, teachers challenged him to “focus more on deepening your practice than talking about it,” a lesson that now shapes his coaching and men’s work. He talks openly about scarcity, the desire to be seen, and the pressure to brand yourself as a healer before you’re ready. The episode also touches on communication as medicine.

Tristan and Matthew question how tools like AI writing can weaken our ability to speak from the heart, sharing a painfully honest story about a love letter partially written with AI that “tainted the purity” of the gesture. They contrast that with the courage it takes to communicate feelings directly, especially for men taught to shut down. Psychedelics show up as another thread, particularly psilocybin and cannabis.

Tristan recounts a 5.5-gram mushroom journey where he felt his father’s presence, cried “a whole river out,” and found a softer, more forgiving way of relating to him. If you’re interested in healing family wounds, rethinking masculinity, or questioning how “conscious” you really are, this one might give you plenty to sit with. What part of your own story feels ready to be healed for real?
