The Gift of Being Known: Healing Together in Christian Sobriety

Episode Overview

  • Healing from addiction is strongly linked to being known and supported in honest community.
  • Shame and fear of rejection often keep women silent, yet sharing the "worst" parts of a story can unlock freedom.
  • Radical vulnerability—going beyond surface-level sharing—is key to breaking isolation and connecting deeply.
  • Telling the truth about sobriety within church and family can be risky, but many find unexpected grace and support.
  • Recovering out loud in Christ helps others realise they are not a uniquely "bad" case and encourages them to step into the light.
“The part of your story that you're most ashamed of… might be the very part God wants to use to reach another woman.”

What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol and to stop hiding the hardest parts of their story? This live recording from the Aligned conference brings together a group of Christian recovery voices who ask exactly that, with honesty, humour, and plenty of tears.

Hosted by Sherry Hoppen in her hometown of Holland, Michigan, the panel centres on one big theme: "We were never meant to heal alone." Sherry is joined by Christy Osborne, Jon Seidl, Caroline Beidler and Ericka Andersen, all sharing how faith and community support women wrestling with alcohol, shame, and secrecy. You’ll hear them tackle why so many women feel disconnected, why rejection feels terrifying, and how hiding becomes a heavy burden.

As Jon puts it, "I recover out loud in Christ so others don't die quietly without Him. I am not called to be anonymous." The conversation looks at the tension between wanting to be known and fearing being truly seen. They talk about "radical vulnerability" instead of what Jon jokingly calls "phone-er-bility"—pretend openness that keeps that last 1% still in the dark.

The group threads scripture, real-life church experiences, and recovery stories to show how grace can meet people in the very mess they’re afraid to reveal. One moving highlight comes when Sarah, a woman from the audience, shares how posting her story online led her pastor to say, "Sarah, I'm proud of you," and connect her with another woman secretly struggling.

Her experience becomes a live example of the idea that "the part of your story that you're most ashamed of… might be the very part God wants to use to reach another woman." If you’ve ever wondered whether telling the truth about your drinking, your doubts, or your pain could cost you everything, this conversation gently asks: what if that honesty is actually the doorway to freedom and real connection?
