What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol? This conversation between host Eddie and guest Tyler Haskill gives a straight-up, unfiltered answer. Tyler, now the newest staff member at TCMI, walks through his journey from Bakersfield party kid to broken alcoholic living out of his car. You’ll hear how grief, COVID layoffs, heavy drinking, drugs and a string of losses left him convinced that the God his family prayed to had abandoned him.
His rock-bottom moment in a hotel room, mixing pills and alcohol and expecting not to wake up, becomes a turning point when he cries out, “God, if you’re real… save me because I can’t.” From there, Tyler describes how family intervention leads him toward Teen Challenge, despite his initial refusal to go to rehab.
His time at the Shafter campus starts with resistance, anger and plans to leave, but a simple chapel worship song, “To the Table”, hits him like a freight train. As he says, the weight of everything is suddenly lifted and he experiences a peace he can’t explain. You’ll get a feel for the raw day-to-day of faith-based rehab: tiny beds, hard labour, Bible studies, and slowly learning that it’s Jesus, not just the programme, that’s changing him.
Tyler shares how he’s pushed onto a guitar in chapel, unexpectedly asked to lead worship, and eventually grows into a full worship leader at multiple Teen Challenge centres.
Now on staff at TCMI, he talks about building up future worship leaders, using music to point broken people to Christ, and reminding anyone struggling that “the lowest version of you… that’s the you that Jesus died for.” If you’ve ever wondered whether God could use your mess, this story might have you asking what your next step of honesty and surrender could look like.
