Beyond Al-Anon: Alternative Support for Families of Addicts
“So putting my time and attention on my children, if someone weren't didn't want to go to Al-Anon, is there another support group, someone that they can call, that they trust that they have an opportunity, that when they're in a crisis mode, they have at least someone who understands their situation, whether it be a professional counselor or a friend, or someone church, synagogue, things like that- right, someone that they can reach out to so that they can get it off their chest so that they're not mulling over it.”
What happens when Al-Anon isn't the right fit for you? In this episode of 'Recovery Is Possible', Michael Van Meter sits down with a guest who shares her personal journey of navigating her husband's drinking problem without relying on Al-Anon. Instead, she turned to other resources that proved invaluable in her journey. From professional counselors to faith-based communities and trusted friends, she discusses various avenues of support that can help families cope with the challenges of addiction.
The conversation highlights the importance of self-care, education, and setting boundaries. The guest also emphasizes the need to detach from the addict's behavior and focus on one's own well-being. This episode offers practical advice and alternative resources for anyone struggling to support a loved one through addiction. Whether you're looking for new strategies or just need to hear from someone who's been there, this episode is a must-listen.
