Fear drove my whole life, and you'll hear that in my story here in a minute.

How do people find strength in their journey to sobriety? This conversation with Danny offers a raw, faith-filled look at rebuilding a life after opiates and heroin have taken almost everything. Raised in inner-city Philadelphia in an Irish Catholic, blue‑collar family, Danny describes a childhood shattered when his brother was shot at age nine.

From that moment, as he says, "Fear drove my whole life." Early drinking and getting high briefly numbed that fear, but a routine root canal in 2006 led to Percocet, and then to heavy oxycodone use. From there it spiralled into heroin, arrests, overdoses, divorce, eviction, job loss and selling his car for drugs. Yet this episode isn’t just about destruction; it’s about what happens when someone finally asks for help.

On Father’s Day 2023, his daughter walked into his near-empty flat and found him surrounded by heroin bags and bottles. Her response and his plea for help led to treatment, a powerful spiritual experience, and working the 12 steps with sponsor Mark. Danny shares how being fully honest in his fifth step, with "no secrets today, not one," became the foundation of his recovery.

You’ll hear how he moved from dope sickness to directing operations at Foundations, a recovery ministry in Colorado, while staying active in AA, H&I service and sponsoring other men.

There’s humour too, like his sponsor’s blunt challenge: "If you don't find a sponsor, don't ever call me again," and his question to sponsees, "How willing are you to be inconvenienced to gain recovery?" With strong emphasis on faith, family healing and doing "the next right thing", this episode speaks to anyone who feels fear has run their life for too long.
