Chris Ryan: From Lonely Childhood to Stand-Up Stardom

Choosing stand-up, I don't know, maybe because it's the hardest core thing in terms of feedback. It's my job and everything it's like, it's everything I hoped for. I feel like it's the best job in the world.

Chris Ryan's tale is one that many can relate to—feeling out of place and yearning for acceptance. Growing up in India during the 1980s, despite being born in Australia, Chris found herself in a cultural limbo. She looked like she belonged, but inside, she felt like an outsider. Moving countries and starting anew at nine years old wasn't easy, and making friends seemed like an insurmountable task.

To bridge the gap, young Chris took a leap of faith inspired by the pop culture of her time. She performed the iconic dance routine from the movie Flashdance for her teacher, hoping it would help her fit in and be noticed. It was a bold move that showcased her determination and humor. However, it wasn't until she discovered stand-up comedy that she truly found her voice.

Embracing the toughest form of feedback, Chris turned her childhood experiences into material for her own show. Through laughter and storytelling, she built her confidence and carved out a unique path in the world of comedy. This episode of 'Days Like These' takes you through Chris's journey from a lonely child in a foreign land to a confident comedian who uses humor to connect with others and find self-worth.

It's a story filled with laughter, resilience, and the power of finding your own voice.
