Josh Smith: From Prison to a $30 Million Enterprise

I just believe that people should be given the opportunity... look as society and a citizen. I don't think you can find anything more rewarding.
Imagine starting with just $6 an hour and ending up with a $30 million enterprise. That's the incredible journey of Josh Smith, founder of the 4th Purpose Foundation. In this episode of 'Beyond the Bars', Josh shares his remarkable story of resilience, transformation, and the power of second chances. Josh's early life was filled with challenges. Growing up in a single-parent household and living in government housing, he faced abuse and was removed from his home at age 11.
By 16, he had been convicted of seven felonies. Entering federal prison at 21 as an 11th-grade dropout, Josh had no plans to change. But life had other plans for him. While incarcerated, Josh found redemption through faith and the guidance of educated fellow inmates. He immersed himself in books and learning, preparing for a different future. Upon release, the road was still tough. Legal restrictions and societal stigmas made reintegration challenging. Yet, Josh's determination didn't waver.
He started a small service company, which grew into a $30 million enterprise with over 150 employees across three states. What makes Josh's story even more compelling is his commitment to hiring formerly incarcerated individuals, giving them the same second chance he received. His company became a beacon of hope for many who struggled to find employment due to their criminal records. Josh's experiences also fueled his passion for criminal justice reform.
He believes prisons should focus more on rehabilitation rather than punishment, setting realistic expectations and providing opportunities for growth. Through the 4th Purpose Foundation, Josh and his wife offer intervention and addiction recovery services, aiming to make a positive impact on individuals, families, and businesses. This episode isn't just about business success; it's about the human spirit's capacity to overcome adversity and give back to the community.
Josh's journey is a testament to the power of resilience, hard work, and the importance of offering second chances. Tune in to 'Beyond the Bars' and be inspired by Josh Smith's incredible story.
