“When I went downstairs on that day, October 4th, 2015, I sat in front of my husband and I said the three words, 'I need help.' That changed the trajectory of my life.”

How do people find strength in their journey to sobriety? This episode of Addiction Talk follows TV host and author Marci Hopkins as she opens up about life as a high-functioning alcoholic and the surrender that led to nearly 11 years alcohol-free. Marci starts by stripping away her job titles and getting honest about who she was before sobriety: a people pleaser, perfectionist and "performer" who "wore a mask" and used alcohol to cope with deep trauma and low self-worth.

On the outside she looked successful, with a smile on her face and a growing media career. On the inside she says she was "broken," living in shame, guilt and self-hatred while hiding how much she drank, even using alcohol as "liquid courage" in front of the camera. The turning point came after a DUI on 4 October 2015.

She describes waking up unable to face the day, then experiencing a powerful shift: "I went downstairs on that day… sat in front of my husband and I said the three words, 'I need help.' That changed the trajectory of my life." From there, Marci explains what surrender meant for her – admitting "I can't do this anymore," asking for help, and accepting that her way wasn’t working.

You’ll hear her talk about committing to AA, doing 90 meetings in 90 days, and finding a new sense of spirituality by praying in a small church, asking to be "that lamb" and letting a higher power guide her. She now uses that experience to "be the hand that you can hold" through recovery, sharing both story and practical tools in her books and work.

For anyone feeling stuck, exhausted by pretending everything is fine, or scared to say "I need help," Marci’s message is simple: "If I can do it, you can do it too." Could hearing from someone who’s been exactly where you are be the spark for your own change?
