Caring for the Caregivers: Tackling Healthcare Worker Trauma
“It's happening every day to them. Every person that comes in that's struggling, and especially the ones that are doing very poorly or passing away. That is trauma. So these healthcare workers are having trauma after trauma, after trauma happen, and trauma can be described like a stack of pancakes, and the more recent is toward the top of the stack.”
Imagine facing trauma day after day while being expected to stay strong for others. That's the reality for many healthcare workers, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this episode of 'Let's Talk: Mind, Body, Spirit' by Sierra Tucson, Camille Drachman delves into the often-overlooked mental health struggles of these frontline heroes.
As the director of new program development and associate director of the trauma recovery program at Sierra Tucson, Drachman offers a unique perspective on the emotional toll healthcare workers endure. She likens trauma to a stack of pancakes, with each new layer adding weight and pressure. The episode sheds light on vicarious trauma—when caregivers absorb the stress and pain of those they help—and emphasizes the critical need for self-care among healthcare professionals.
Drachman introduces Sierra Tucson's healthcare heroes program, which provides a holistic approach to healing. From a Five-Day renew and heal program to an extended signature trauma program, these initiatives aim to address the physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of trauma. This episode is a heartfelt call to action: it's time we focus on healing those who heal us.
