How to Change Everything: Mark L Lockwood on True Mental and Emotional Healing

Episode Overview

  • Real recovery requires changing everything across physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual levels, rather than looking for shortcuts.
  • Quick fixes like drugs or psychedelics without preparation, support and deeper work often leave people disappointed.
  • People stay stuck by repeating an old story about who they are; healing begins by stopping that narrative and writing a new one.
  • Frozen emotional pain from the past must be felt and completed, turning wounds into emotional wisdom.
  • Spiritual connection and a higher power are presented as essential for lasting transformation, not just temporary relief.
“"Half measures get you nowhere. Half measures avail us of nothing."”

What can we learn from those who have battled addiction, depression and long-term anxiety for decades? Mark L Lockwood brings 25 years of experience to this conversation on how people really heal their mental and emotional health, especially when quick fixes keep letting them down. Speaking from work at his Centre for Healing and Life Transformation, Mark challenges the idea that a pill, a retreat or a few therapy sessions can "fix" years of pain.

He talks about people arriving after ketamine or psilocybin treatments that "haven't worked" because, as he puts it, "life will win, you're not gonna shortcut it." If you've ever felt stuck in what he calls "exhausting loops of long-term depression, chronic anxiety, unresolved trauma or addictions," you'll likely recognise the patterns he describes. Mark lays out four pillars of real change: physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual. Physically, it's about routines, movement, muscle and repairing a frazzled nervous system.

Psychologically, he focuses on interrupting unconscious thought loops and the "story" you keep telling yourself about who you are. Emotionally, he explains how frozen pain from the past keeps people locked in depression or anxiety until those cycles are completed.

The fourth pillar is spirituality, which Mark sees as non-negotiable: "You're going nowhere without God, you're going nowhere without your higher power." He returns often to the idea that healing and transformation are not the same thing: healing is ongoing in a broken world, while transformation means going "above your form" and rewriting your life at every level.

The message is direct but hopeful: half measures don't work, but "I've never once seen anyone who was willing that didn't get the healing that they wanted." If you're tired of patching up the same old story, this conversation might push you to ask: are you ready to change everything, rather than just a little?
