From Daily Drinking to Real Fatherhood: JB’s Honest Sobriety Story

Episode Overview

  • Daily drinking often starts as binge drinking that feels ‘normal’ within a friend group, making it harder to recognise as a serious problem.
  • Trying to manage or moderate alcohol can become exhausting, while complete abstinence and clear boundaries actually make life simpler.
  • Community support and honest sharing with others who understand can be the turning point after countless failed solo attempts.
  • Sobriety doesn’t instantly fix everything, but it creates the space to address anxiety, emotions and relationships more honestly.
  • Reclaiming presence with family and children becomes a powerful motivation, making the hard early days of sobriety worth it.
Alcohol, if left to its fullest extent, will take everything from you. It will. It'll take your life. It'll take your family. It'll take everything from you.

Curious about how others manage to claw their way out of daily drinking and into a life that actually feels worth waking up for? JB’s story might hit closer to home than you’d expect. JB grew up in what he describes as a house that felt like “a boiling pot of water” – chaotic, loud, and emotionally overwhelming.

By nine he was smoking cigarettes, by 11 he was using substances, and by 12 he was sneaking liquor from his parents’ cabinet. School was a constant struggle, confidence took a beating, and alcohol quickly became the go-to way to feel a tiny bit in control. Fast forward to adulthood, and the binge drinking turned into daily drinking, then drinking and driving, then hiding cans in the car and recycling in secret.

He talks honestly about panic attacks, “hundreds of day ones,” and the crushing shame of knowing, as he puts it, “I was more focused on getting alcohol and drinking it and consuming it and being drunk than I was spending time” with his wife and two small kids.

One of the heaviest moments comes when JB recalls a late-night suicide scare at a petrol station with a firearm in his hand – a moment that scared him enough to get “sober curious,” but not yet enough to stop. What finally shifted things was realising alcohol’s grip had become unmanageable and that, in his words, “alcohol won… I got beat.

And I’m done with it.” This episode will resonate with anyone trapped between ‘it’s not that bad’ and ‘I can’t live like this anymore.’ JB breaks down how community support, honest sharing, and simply “not drinking today” became the foundation for rebuilding his life, his mental health, and his relationship with his family. If you’re stuck in that exhausting cycle of managing and hiding your drinking, could this be the nudge to try doing something different?
