You become what you behold, so I started looking at God.

How do individuals turn their lives around after addiction? This message from Cedar Point Recovery follows Janae Swann as she talks through a story that goes from childhood shame and abuse to meth addiction, trafficking, and, eventually, a faith-fuelled life in recovery. Growing up in a family of gifted church speakers, Janae always felt like "this bright blue balloon in a room of red balloons", convinced she didn’t belong.

As a child and teenager, she carried secret trauma, became a "proficient liar", and later stepped into exotic dancing and drug dealing, all while building a harsh inner identity of being unlovable and beyond repair. Things spiral further as she loses three children in different ways, becomes deeply addicted to meth, and ends up with seven felonies.

Yet the turning point begins when she finally gets clean, starts to reconnect with her children, and chooses to see herself through a different lens: "You become what you behold, so I started looking at God." From there, she studies scripture, swaps old labels for truth, and slowly rebuilds life as a mum, wife and student, earning multiple degrees.

Janae also describes the terrifying birth of her daughter Amelia, who doctors expected to die or live with no awareness or mobility. Instead of accepting that verdict, she clings to the declaration, "She’s going to live and not die and declare the wonderful works of the Lord," and watches small, hard-won improvements unfold. Later, her marriage collapses when her husband is imprisoned for crimes against the family, leaving her a single mum of five, working four jobs and studying.

Out of that pain, she and her daughter Abby now run "No Strings Attached", reaching others in exploitation and addiction with practical support and a clear message of hope. If you’re wrestling with shame, old labels, or the belief that you’re too far gone, Janae’s story asks a blunt question: what could change if you trusted God with your whole story and asked Him for a purpose for your pain?
