Let Go, Grab Hold: Walking in the Spirit Instead of Staying Stuck

Episode Overview

  • Real change, including freedom from addiction, is linked to being born again and walking daily in the Spirit of God.
  • Quoting Bible verses out of context can create false expectations of God and deep disappointment when life does not instantly improve.
  • Knowing what God has prepared for your life stops you settling for what your upbringing, environment, or past addiction says you are.
  • Politics and laws may label behaviour illegal but cannot change the heart; a living relationship with Jesus can.
  • God becomes optional when people do not realise what He has already freely given them, so learning to live in the Spirit shifts priorities, habits, and desires.
You want to change the world, then change you.

What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol, drugs, and old destructive patterns? Bishop Lance Johnson leans into that question by tying everyday struggles to a deeply spiritual challenge: are you visiting God occasionally or actually living in His Spirit day by day? Speaking straight to people worn out by addiction, dysfunction, or generational chaos, he argues that change doesn’t start with politics, policies, or self-help slogans.

It starts with being "born again" and learning to "walk in the Spirit" rather than relying on old habits and sheer willpower. He warns how easy it is to quote verses out of context, get disappointed when circumstances don’t shift, and then quietly decide God can be taken or left. A standout moment comes when he invites Marsha to share her story.

Once addicted to cocaine and meth and living a rough, homeless lifestyle, she explains that laws never stopped her: "It was illegal, but I did it anyway." What changed was meeting Jesus and moving from taking and stealing to working, giving to the homeless, and putting God first.

Her life becomes a living example of his core point: "You want to change the world, then change you." Johnson keeps pressing on the idea that many people stay stuck in poverty, anger, or broken relationships because they don’t know what God has prepared for them. If you don’t know there’s a different future available, why would you reach for it?

By linking scriptures from 1 Corinthians and Romans, he challenges listeners to make God non-optional, give their whole life to Him, and let the Holy Spirit reveal what has been "freely given" already. For anyone tired of religion that feels mystical but unreachable, this message offers a blunt but hopeful challenge: are you just quoting God, or are you actually walking with Him every day?
