Days Like These — True Stories
How do you orchestrate a meeting with your hero? For Tate Sheridan it was simple: a clandestine operation involving a long and heartfelt letter, a demo CD, some wrapping paper and sneaky dash backstage at a big Elton John gig. Two years later, Tate was to join his now mentor on tour, performing in front of 38,000 Elton John fans playing the actual piano of a real life rock and roll god. Thanks to Tate Sheridan for scoring this episode and for allowing us to use his music. Tracks in the episode are 'Life Was Lonely', 'Fade to Black' and 'Angel Man'

What happens when a fan's dream turns into reality? For Tate Sheridan, a young musician from Canberra, it was an unexpected journey of friendship and mentorship with the legendary Elton John. The episode 'Letters to Elton' from 'Days Like These — True Stories' unfolds Tate's audacious plan to hand-deliver a demo CD and heartfelt letter to his idol during a concert in 2012. What seemed like a long shot became the start of an incredible story.
After a nail-biting encounter with security and a few frisbee-like moves, Tate's package found its way to Elton. Two years later, Tate received a phone call that changed everything. Imagine sitting with friends at university, only to receive a call from Elton John himself! Initially dismissing it as a prank, Tate soon realised it was indeed the real deal. This was the beginning of a unique bond where Elton not only appreciated Tate's music but also offered guidance and encouragement.
Their relationship blossomed into a mentorship, with Elton providing feedback on Tate's songs and inviting him to tour as an opening act. Playing in front of thousands, including the honour of using Elton's own piano, Tate experienced both the thrill and pressure of performing at such a high level. Yet, despite these successes, Tate faced the harsh realities of the music industry, with rejections and setbacks.
Through it all, Elton's advice to stay positive and keep working hard has been a constant source of support for Tate. This episode is a heartwarming reminder that sometimes dreams do come true, but the journey is filled with challenges that require resilience and perseverance. Could you imagine receiving a life-changing call from your hero? It might just be worth taking that leap of faith.
