Churches as Safe Havens: Chuck Robinson's Vision for Addiction Recovery

My mission is to provide help, the church provide resources for the people that walk into the church house, into the synagogue, into the Mosque and say I need help, and for them to be received with warmth and open arms, no shame, no guilt, no judgment, and that the church can be a safe place for people to come and get help
Chuck Robinson has an inspiring story that weaves through business, ministry, and addiction recovery. Growing up in Oklahoma City, Chuck's life took a significant turn in 1982. He juggled raising four sons, coaching sports, and running a business while being actively involved in his local church. Feeling a divine calling, he began volunteering in various church missions and youth groups, eventually becoming the first pastor of recovery at Henderson Hills Baptist Church in Edmond, Oklahoma.
In this episode of 'Beyond the Bars', Chuck shares his mission to transform places of worship into safe havens for those battling addiction. He believes that churches, synagogues, and mosques should be welcoming spaces where people can seek help without fear of judgment. His approach is rooted in empathy and personal experience, emphasizing that those who have walked the path of addiction are uniquely equipped to support others on their journey to recovery.
Chuck's work with Elements Behavioral Health as the National Director of Christian Programming and Outreach has allowed him to take his local successes to a national level. He discusses the importance of proper assessment and screening for those seeking help and how religious communities can play a pivotal role in this process.
If you're curious about how faith-based communities can contribute to addiction recovery or looking for ways to make your place of worship more inclusive and supportive, this episode is a must-listen. Chuck's journey and insights offer a roadmap for building church-based recovery ministries that are both compassionate and effective.
