From Glamour and Chaos to Honest Sobriety with Lyra N

Episode Overview

  • Cravings can flare up years into sobriety, especially in isolation, but a gap between urge and action is often enough to stay safe.
  • So-called controlled drinking usually exposes a lack of control as self-made rules are repeatedly broken.
  • A sponsor who is calm, honest and consistent can provide the objective guidance that family often can’t.
  • Clear, timely amends may indirectly encourage loved ones to seek their own recovery.
  • Simple daily practices – prayer, meditation, contact with sponsor and sponsees – help when enthusiasm for meetings fades.
“"Why don't I put everything I can't do today in the cupboard and leave it there and only take the things with me that I can work on today?"”

Curious about how others navigate their sobriety journey? This conversation between host Mike S and guest Lyra N offers a mix of raw honesty, gallows humour and very practical recovery talk that many people in or considering sobriety may relate to. Mike opens up about recording after months of lockdown, marking four years sober while feeling stronger cravings than he has in years.

He describes standing in a New York restaurant, mesmerised by martinis and vodka sodas, and realising that a single word to the bartender could undo everything. That tiny gap between urge and action becomes a key thread in the episode. Lyra, 30 and sober since February 2015, shares a very different but equally chaotic path.

From being the "emaciated model" who smelt of alcohol on shoots to living "for the story" and being willing to "die for a story", she paints a vivid picture of how glamour, cocaine and tequila eventually led to a blackout car crash that could easily have killed her and her passenger.

You’ll hear how she first went to meetings almost as entertainment, still drinking afterwards, and how day-counting on her own terms slowly revealed that she wasn’t in control at all. Her description of setting careful limits for a night out – then ending up swigging warm tequila at 3 a.m. and nearly hitting a palm tree – brings home how flimsy those “plans” can be. The episode also spends time on sponsorship, amends and relationships.

Lyra talks about finding sponsors who were calm, reliable and honest, and how making amends to her father unexpectedly nudged him into getting sober himself. Both Mike and Lyra stress simple tools: daily prayer, meditation, honest sharing, and keeping resentments in check by managing expectations. If you’ve ever wondered whether meetings, sponsors and "one day at a time" actually change anything, this story may give you plenty to think about.
