I had everything I wanted and I felt like shit inside, so much so that I had to start drinking from the beginning of the day till I fell off a bar stool at the end of the day.

In this episode, Megan shares her poignant journey from a seemingly privileged upbringing in Beverly Hills to battling alcoholism and eventually finding sobriety through the support of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Born and raised in the affluent zip code of Beverly Hills, Megan's early life did not show any signs of the alcoholism that would later emerge. Her father was a dedicated doctor, and her mother managed the household, typical of 1950s family dynamics.

Despite this, Megan found herself entangled in a web of substance abuse, moving from alcohol to marijuana, all while maintaining an outwardly successful life. Megan recounts her experiences in UC Santa Barbara where her interest in chemistry steered her towards making grain alcohol and smoking marijuana. Her career path led her to a legal department in a title insurance firm, but her substance abuse continued, escalating to the use of prescription drugs alongside alcohol.

This period of her life was marked by a sense of pretension and hiding her true self from those around her. The turning point came when Megan realized that despite having everything she wanted materially, she felt profoundly unhappy inside. This realization, coupled with the support of a friend who dragged her to AA meetings, initiated her path to recovery.

Megan emphasizes the importance of service within the AA community, a principle she learned early on in Los Angeles, which helped her stay sober. Over time, Megan's commitment to her sobriety enabled her to pursue educational opportunities, eventually working for a college and attending classes full-time. Her growth was not limited to academia; she also found meaningful relationships, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community, where she established friendships untainted by romantic interests. Megan's story is also one of love and companionship.

She recounts her relationship with her partner, whom she met shortly after they both achieved sobriety. The relationship has endured for over 16 years, though not without its challenges. Megan attributes their success to the principles of AA and Al-Anon, highlighting the importance of gentle communication and mutual understanding. Grateful for the support she has received, Megan expresses her appreciation for those who welcomed her to Houston, showcasing the warmth and hospitality of the AA community in Texas.

Her story is a testament to the transformative power of community, service, and personal determination in overcoming the challenges of alcoholism.
