I didn't take the suggestions that were given to me. I went into that meeting and I knew that I was burning the bridges for those people for taking something from them. That's when I started working the steps to recovery.
Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, Lee had a strict upbringing with parents who neither drank nor smoked. Despite this, his brother's early run-ins with drugs and the law left a lasting impression on him. At just 12 years old, Lee was determined to avoid substances, but peer pressure got the best of him at 14. One night at a friend's party, he had his first taste of alcohol and spiraled into his first binge drinking session.
The next morning, he lied to his father about it, setting off a chain of events that would shape his teenage years. Lee's drinking habits escalated through high school. He began sneaking alcohol from friends' parents' liquor cabinets and found himself in increasingly troubling situations. By the time he was a junior, even his friends were urging him to slow down, and his parents resorted to drug testing him at home.
Despite these interventions, Lee's drinking only worsened, culminating in a three-day stint in jail over Thanksgiving. It was during this low point that Lee realized he needed help. He turned to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and began working through the steps of recovery. In this episode of Steppin' Out Radio, Lee opens up about the challenges he faced on his path to sobriety and the pivotal moments that led him to seek help.
