Mario is a nurse, Navy veteran, husband, dad and active church member who “never even thought about cancer being part of me.” A routine VA check revealed an elevated PSA in 2022, but because he felt fine, he admits he dragged his feet.
It took a persistent provider and a biopsy showing a Gleason score of seven to make the danger clear. Just as surgery was planned, life threw in a plot twist: a serious motorcycle accident that left him with a broken hip and a ruptured shoulder. While dealing with intense pain, he recalls crying out to God in the ambulance and later thanking every staff member in radiology, saying, “Whatever I’m going to say, I want to try to be positive.
