Nanaimo's Community Safety Officers: A New Approach to Local Security

The idea being is that there's a host of different agencies and people and participants in it, and what it seems to do there that works well is it gives area residents, you know, and businesses a bit of assurance that you know that these services are delivered in ways that aren't impactful in the neighborhood and they seem to have really good success with it.

Imagine strolling through downtown Nanaimo, feeling a renewed sense of safety and community. That's the vision behind the city's new Community Safety Officer program. In this episode of People First Radio, Dave LaBerge, Manager of Community Safety with the City of Nanaimo, shares insights into this innovative initiative. Unlike traditional security measures, these officers are trained in trauma-informed practices, ensuring they can handle various situations with empathy and understanding.

Drawing inspiration from successful models in other cities like Penticton, the program aims to make non-business hours safer for both residents and visitors. By fostering a secure environment, the city hopes to encourage more people to enjoy local restaurants, theaters, and events. While these officers aren't a catch-all solution, their presence is a significant step towards building a more inclusive and safe community. Tune in to hear how Nanaimo is redefining local security and what it means for you.
