"If I keep doing these things, I'm going to end up dead or in jail."

How do individuals turn their lives around after addiction? This conversation on The Addiction Podcast – Point of No Return follows John Luedke, a commodities trader, author of *Big Dump*, and sobriety advocate, as he talks frankly about going from near-death in Cabo to 100lb weight loss and a new life without substances. John shares how his struggles began long before his first joint, with anxiety and a constant need for external validation.

Marijuana in eighth grade quickly ramped up to alcohol, cocaine, Xanax, and opiates in high school and college. He jokes that he was "the bad influence" in the group, always chasing more intense highs. Things came to a head on a spring break trip to Cabo, where street cartel members held him for money and threatened his life.

Waking up after that, he realised, "If I keep doing these things, I'm going to end up dead or in jail." Alongside addiction, food was his "first drug". From age seven to 23 he struggled with overeating and body image, reaching around 320 pounds while drinking daily, taking Xanax, using cocaine several times a week and doing nitrous oxide.

In 2022 he started eating properly, then added the gym and lost about 100 pounds in 11 months, learning first-hand what discipline and consistency can do. Sobriety came on 1 January 2024, when John quit alcohol, drugs, nicotine and even caffeine all at once. He describes the first two weeks as brutal, especially nicotine withdrawals, but says that through journalling, meditation and hard self-reflection he saw "the potential of who I could be".

He’s honest that his addictive mindset shifted into fitness at first, but he now uses that intensity more constructively, mentoring younger guys and sharing his story. For anyone stuck in active addiction, his advice is clear: do the inner work, find healthy passions, and fill your time so your brain has fewer chances to drag you back. What could that look like in your own life?
