Self Love, Inner Child Healing and First Steps in Recovery
Episode Overview
- Use a strong, honest support circle when facing medical pain in recovery, and be open about fears around medication and relapse.
- Practise self-awareness around pain and cravings, and use distraction and gentle activity to reduce focus on discomfort.
- Challenge long-standing negative beliefs by asking where they came from and whether you would say the same things to someone you love.
- Separate thoughts from feelings so you can question hopeless thinking instead of treating it as unchangeable truth.
- Choose a clear, realistic starting line—such as a short walk or simple movement—and let small consistent actions build confidence over time.
“Movement equals healing. That’s the whole foundation of what Team Addict to Athlete stands for.”
What can we learn from those who have battled addiction? This episode of Addict II Athlete’s weekly live show, *Overtime with Coach Blu*, centres on self-love, inner healing and taking those awkward first steps toward change. Coach Blu Robinson, a mental health therapist and addiction counsellor, and Athletic Director Marissa Robinson answer real-time questions from people in recovery. One caller has just had a tooth pulled, has a history of painkiller addiction and is scared of relapsing.
Rather than giving rigid rules, they talk honestly about support systems, honest self-awareness and using distraction and gentle movement to cope with pain. As Coach Blu puts it, “Movement equals healing. That’s the whole foundation of what Team Addict to Athlete stands for.” From there, the conversation shifts to rebuilding self-confidence after a lifetime of self-doubt and childhood hurt.
They talk about “inner child” work, even suggesting the film *Disney’s The Kid* as a simple way to picture meeting your younger self. Instead of trying to warn that child about every mistake, they suggest the one thing most people never think to say: “I love you.” The hosts also tackle feeling stuck in depression, anxiety and weight struggles.
They stress the difference between thoughts and feelings (“I feel as though I’ll never get out of this rut” is actually a thought), and encourage choosing a clear starting line: walk to the mailbox at 4pm, go round the block, get in the pool. Small, realistic actions beat grand but vague intentions every time. Throughout, the tone stays warm, humorous and down-to-earth, aimed at anyone in addiction recovery or supporting someone who is.
If you’ve been hard on yourself for years, this conversation might nudge you to ask: what tiny step of self-love could you actually take today?
