This greatest-hits episode of Dopey lines up dark humour, graphic honesty and serious recovery as filmmaker and actor Brian Whisenant shares what host Dave calls “one of the dopiest stories ever told.” You’ll hear how Brian grew up as a gay kid in small-town Mississippi, carrying unspoken sexual trauma and a double life he couldn’t even name.
He talks openly about being groomed and raped at 15, and how years later he still chased the same abuser, saying he’d boxed the whole thing away just to survive. As he puts it, “Honesty is the antidote to disease thinking,” and that theme runs through the whole conversation.
From there it’s a chaotic tour through New York theatre, coming out to his parents just before a performance of *Grease*, and the slow slide into cocaine, “crank,” crystal meth and chemsex. Brian describes meth-fuelled sex parties, zoom-room hookups, a sex sling, adult pull-ups, and a terrifying psychotic break that ended with him strapped down in an ER, convinced strangers had drugged him.
At one point he remembers sitting in a Taco Bell car park, wine in a Dr Pepper cup, realising, “Holy shit. I’m a drug addict.” The episode also touches on chemsex recovery work, disentangling sex from drugs and technology, and the particular pressures facing gay men using meth. Brian explains why Narcotics Anonymous fits him (“that word ‘addiction’ saved my life”) and how he went from homeless and iv meth to working in treatment and making his film *Wrath Mercy*.
