From Alcohol and Anger to Faith and Fitness: The Powerful Story of Drew Sanchez

Episode Overview

  • Change often begins by reframing alcohol and drugs from ‘pleasure’ to a clear picture of the pain and damage they cause.
  • When removing a substance, immediately fill the gap with healthy activities such as exercise, meditation, learning or service.
  • Big goals in recovery become manageable by breaking them into small, consistent steps rather than chasing perfection.
  • Past suffering can point directly to purpose: survive it, build a better life, then return to help those still in it.
  • Safe people, support groups and a regular quiet space for reflection or prayer are crucial for handling ongoing anger, fear and insecurity.
When you remove a poison out of your life, there’s going to be a void there… when you remove a poison, you have to plug in productivity immediately.

Curious about how others navigate their sobriety journey? This conversation with former rapper, business owner and non-profit founder Drew Sanchez is packed with raw honesty, humour and faith-fuelled motivation. Drew shares how alcohol turned a fearful, bullied teenager into a violent 300-pound adult, with every major loss in his life happening while he was drinking.

His turning point came in a moment of chest pain and panic, when he says he heard God say, “You’re asking me for a whole lot and you’re not doing your part. You better get up and do something.” From there, he cleared his fridge, hit the gym three times a day, dropped 115 pounds and swapped bar nights for cardio, community work and spiritual growth.

You’ll hear how he redirected his “addictive personality” into what he calls a superpower for health, business and service. He breaks down his “survive, thrive, revive” idea: you get through the suffering, build a better life, then go back to help people who are still where you once were. For Drew, that means speaking in prisons, schools and starting his men’s non-profit, The Fellowship.

The hosts and Drew dig into practical tools like the pain–pleasure principle for changing habits, chunking big goals into small steps, and filling the “void” of addiction by plugging in exercise, meditation, service and safe community. Drew is very open about still wrestling with anger, insecurity and pride, stressing the need for “safe places”, men’s groups, and what he calls a “diamond throne” – a physical spot where he goes to pray and be still.

If you’re wondering whether change can really happen quickly, or you’re struggling to believe you’re capable of more, this chat might just challenge that story. What could you plug into the space where alcohol used to sit in your life?
