Before I go to sleep at night, I'm like, yeah, I'm still home, right? And I'm still sober, right? So that's kind of important to me.

In this episode of Recover Out Loud, host Sean Young invites Jeff Vickers, a Peer Support Specialist, to share his compelling life journey. Jeff's story is one of resilience and transformation, set against the backdrop of the Bronx during the height of the war on drugs. Growing up, Jeff was surrounded by a challenging environment filled with extortionists, number runners, and other influences.

At the age of 15, he entered the world of drug dealing, feeling a temporary sense of freedom through substance use. Despite the chaos of his early life, Jeff found a path to recovery. He is now approaching five years of continuous sobriety, a milestone he cherishes deeply. Jeff's journey was not easy; diagnosed with multiple mental health issues, he embraced recovery through the support of his community and peers.

His accomplishments include obtaining a NAMI certification and working as a designated recovery coach, enabling him to connect with law enforcement and assist those in crisis. Jeff's dedication to his recovery and advocacy work is evident in his achievements, such as authoring 'Sober Slogans, Recovery Models We Love,' a book that highlights the powerful language of recovery. By sharing his story, Jeff encourages others to visualize their higher self and strive for personal growth.

Throughout the episode, Jeff discusses the importance of building positive relationships with law enforcement, emphasizing the transformative power of mutual respect and understanding. His probation officer, recognizing Jeff's progress, supports his nonprofit endeavors and encourages his reentry efforts.
